Jake
Journeyed to the Bridge July 25, 2007
Jake started life as an abandoned, disabled puppy who defied all the odds to become a world-class rescue dog. He assisted at the World Trade Center in 2001, burrowing through debris at ground zero in search of survivors. He was also in New Orleans as a search and rescue dog after Hurricane Katrina, and assisted at countless other disasters. This beautiful black Lab was a true hero in every sense of the word. Jake succumbed to cancer at age 12, on July 25, 2007. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Our condolences to his loving owner, Mary Flood.
Sirius
January 1997 - September 11, 2001
Police Dog. World Trade Center Victim and Hero, he was the only K-9 officer to lose his life in the World Trade Center disaster. Sirius graduated from Port Newark K-9 Center on July 15, 2000, as an Explosive Detection Dog. Badge #17, he was employed by the New York/New Jersey Port Authority Police Department as a K-9 Officer who worked at the World Trade Center every day protecting people and seeking out potential explosives, keeping everyone safe and secure. On the day of the attack, he gave his life for his handler, Officer David Lim, and in so doing, countless others were saved. A huge memorial service honoring K-9 Officer Sirius was held on April 24, 2002, in which he was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery by the British Embassy. An oil portrait, "Salute to Sirius" by Debbie Stonebraker, was unveiled along with a poem "Sirius ..." by Susan Brozenec. Many noted dignitaries and police K-9 units from around the country were present.
